This is from Justice League of America’s “Vibe” #1, from February. Unfortunately, the person who adds word bubbles blocked the poster (along with the graffiti from my friend Kevin Oakley right next to it) with word bubbles. This is how it looked when Pete drew it.

Vibe #2 is available at your favorite local comic store now.

“Autour de La Fin Du Monde” (Around The End Of The World) is a silent documentary (w/beautiful music) on the making of the 1931 Abel Gance directed talkie film, “La Fin Du Monde”. This documentary on Abel Gance’s film was directed by Eugene Deslaw, and has a date of 1930 listed on it. Although this documentary is a non-talkie, Gance’s “La Fin Du Monde” was the very first talkie film to come out of France. In fact, Gance invented a stereophonic sound system just to be able to properly present the audio. At the time, Abel Gance was known by many as the greatest film director of all time, and had already produced several of what are considered “masterpiece” films, including “Napoleon”. Unfortunately, Gance’s streak was ruined by the producers of this film. After 2 years in production and 500 million franks spent, they decided that he was taking too long and using too much of their money. They lost patience, took the unfinished film away from Gance, and edited it themselves. What was released was an unfinished Frankenstein of a film and a critical failure. Gance’s career was never the same after they did this to him.

Personally, I think this 18 minute docu-film is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen/heard. We’re not looking at scenes from a film. We’re watching these people going about their lives behind the scenes. It’s like we’re looking through a window in time, watching the lives of all of these people in 1930. I could watch this 18 minutes in a loop for hours at a time.

I apologize for the captions and the website logo in the corner. The only copy of this I’ve found was from the guy who runs that website, and he refused to allow me a copy sans his logo. I’ve always thought it strange that people think it’s ok to take someone else’s work and post their own logo on it, as if that gives them some sort of ownership of someone else’s work.

If anybody has a clean copy of this, or knows how to get one, please let me know. Also, if anyone knows how to get a copy of “La Fin Du Monde”, please let me know as well. I’d like any and all versions released. The French version was 105 minutes long. There was a further chopped American version which was under one hour… which I’ve heard is absolutely horrible. Nevertheless, I’d love to see both.

Make sure you hit the “full screen” icon in the lower right corner of the video for the full experience.

It’s not very often that I push causes, but this one is special. Are you a fan of The Little Rascals? Or perhaps you know the kids from their original name, Our Gang? Well, Norman Chaney (AKA Chubby) was one of the gang from 1929 to 1931. A few years later, at the age of 21, he lost his life to a glandular disorder. Ironically, the same problem that enabled him to play the “Big Kid” in the first place. Eighty five years later, I just discovered that he is buried in an unmarked grave in Baltimore Cemetery.

I decided to do something about it.

I just launched a fundraising campaign on IndieGoGo.com to buy Chubby a head stone. I’m also hoping to get one for his mother, who is also in an unmarked grave, right next to him.

If you’re a collector, my friend Bob Satterfield is offering up 20 autographed photos of Joe Cobb (Chubby’s predecessor, the very first “Big Kid” on the show), and we’re offering them up as rewards to anyone who donates $50 or more toward Chubby’s head stone.

Please check out the campaign page for more information, video, and more. If you can’t donate, you can still help Chubby by simply sharing the campaign page on facebook, twitter, your personal blog, telling your friends about it, etc.
